What is the mission of Metabuilding Labs?
Metabuilding Labs supports SMEs in the construction sector by providing access to a European network of Open Innovation Testbeds (OITB) within a tailored innovation ecosystem.
The project directly involves companies in the design and testing of services, enabling them to experiment with new solutions in real conditions and accelerate their competitiveness against major industry players.
Through its Open Innovation digital platform, which acts as a Single Entry Point, companies can access more than 100 testing facilities across 12 European countries — including laboratories, test benches, pilot buildings, and Living Labs.
The consortium of 40 partners bridges research, technology, and industry to facilitate the development and validation of innovative solutions for next-generation buildings.
Towards a European Open Innovation Ecosystem: The Affiliate Membership Tier
To better address the needs of the sector, Metabuilding is introducing a strategic evolution of its collaborative innovation ecosystem: the Metabuilding Affiliate Membership Tier, a new membership model designed for dynamic companies and stakeholders driving the transformation of the built environment in Europe.
Today, companies and associations seek direct access to the knowledge, tools, and value generated by the Metabuilding community. The new formula offers a simplified partnership pathway, enabling members to focus on growth and integration within Europe’s innovation network.
Becoming a member means joining a continuously expanding collaborative ecosystem and being able to:

A Key Moment for the Metabuilding Labs Community
The official launch of the Affiliate Membership Tier will take place during the session “Joining the Movement – The Future of the Metabuilding Ecosystem”, as part of the event “Building the Future: Launching Europe’s Open Innovation Ecosystem for Construction”, scheduled in Brussels on November 19.
During the session, Thomas Messervey, CEO of R2M Solution, and Germain Adell, General Director of Metabuilding ASBL, will present the new membership model and outline its strategic vision.
The Platform and Its Services
The Metabuilding Labs platform serves as the digital meeting point of Europe’s innovation ecosystem for the built environment.
It offers companies tools and services to access funding opportunities, gain visibility for innovative solutions, find technological or commercial partners, and test and certify their technologies free of charge.
Through the European Open Innovation Testbed (OITB) network, Metabuilding Labs provides access to laboratories, Living Labs, and pilot buildings to validate and optimize new solutions under real or simulated conditions.
With over 700 tests and 170 innovative services, the platform supports companies at every stage of technological development, contributing to a more sustainable, competitive, and digital construction sector.

O3BETs in the Metabuilding Ecosystem
O3BETs (Open source |Open data |Open access Building Envelope Testbench) are small-scale test laboratories dedicated to the building envelope, a key element for energy efficiency, comfort, and durability in buildings.
These standardized labs allow testing of materials, systems, and digital solutions under controlled conditions, simulating different climate scenarios to validate and optimize innovations before real-world application.
Thanks to O3BETs, companies can reduce development time and costs, enhance collaboration between research and industry, and support the spread of skills aligned with European policies on energy efficiency and sustainability in construction.
The O3BET Network and Commitment to Solar Energy
The Metabuilding Labs network includes seven O3BETs located in various European climate zones, all powered by solar energy through the integration of Onyx Solar photovoltaic glass.
These digitally connected O3BETs allow testing of building envelope products under real conditions, leveraging Digital Twins and Digital Product Passports for a data-driven and sustainability-oriented approach.
La Metabuilding Association (ASBL)
The Metabuilding Labs ecosystem, the digital platform, and the Open Innovation Testbed (OITB) network are managed by the Metabuilding Association ASBL, a non-profit organization based in Brussels that brings together European stakeholders in research and innovation for the construction sector.
The association is committed to consolidating and expanding the ecosystem, building strategic links with European innovation initiatives such as the Built4People Partnership.
Thomas Messervey, CEO of R2M Solution, currently serves as President of the Metabuilding ASBL, guiding the vision toward an increasingly integrated and collaborative network.
