ReBoat
Turning Island Waste into Waves of Change
ReBoat transforms waste management on European islands by using a mobile recycling plant on a boat, engaging communities, tourists, SMEs, and creatives in circular economy activities.
The replicable model reduces CO2 emissions and energy use while boosting awareness and participation in sustainable tourism and production.
Supported by digital tools, ReBoat fosters co-creation of circular products and sustainable tourism experiences that connect environmental goals with local culture.
ReBoat addresses the mounting waste management challenges faced by European islands, where tourism can double local waste production (e.g., 1.25 kg per tourist per day in Malta compared to 0.68 kg for residents). By using a mobile recycling hub on a boat, ReBoat engages citizens, tourists, artists, and SMEs in hands-on upcycling of local plastics and textiles into high-value, co-designed products.
Key Impacts:
- – Activates local communities and tourists in circular, creative recycling—improving acceptance of recycled goods.
- – Supports the creative sector, tapping into a €185 billion EU market and generating new opportunities for small businesses.
- – Delivers flexible, decentralized waste management suited to islands with limited infrastructure.
- – Targets at least 20% recycled content per product (averaging 40% across prototypes), reducing landfill stress and material costs for local SMEs.
- – Provides a replicable model for other island and coastal regions, strengthening both local economies and sustainability.
R2M Solution serves as Exploitation Manager for ReBoat, leading strategies to boost the project’s impact, sustainability, and market uptake.
- – Develops a waste-tracking app that monitors plastics and textiles flows digitally, ensuring transparency, traceability, and data-driven decisions across recycling stages.
- – Integrates AVANTI, an AI-based tool for HR and skills development, to support local artisans, designers, and community members in gaining circular economy skills.
- – Combines digital innovation and strategic management to help deliver a scalable, replicable model for sustainable island ecosystems.
