Making PEDs

Decision-making digital twins for climate neutral PEDs

Making PEDs focuses on creating Digital Twins as decision support tools for cities on their path to climate neutrality. The project brings together 11 partners from 4 countries to help cities manage the complexity of urban district regeneration, facilitating decision-making and engaging citizens.
The goal is not only to research and plan Climate Neutral Plus Energy Districts (PEDs) but also to accelerate their practical implementation. Making PEDs develops digital twins to support holistic assessment, sustainability predictions, and the impact of Citizen Energy Communities at scale.
Four urban living labs in Linz (Austria), Civitavecchia-Rome (Italy), El Prat (Spain), and Bærum (Norway) serve as testbeds for digital twins and models supporting climate-neutral district regeneration.

To promote the transition to Plus Energy Districts with a global technical and social outlook, Making PEDs aims to:

  • Implement a participatory approach involving Urban Living Labs and stakeholders to analyze needs.
  • Use 3D models and CityGML standards for comprehensive urban and energy analysis.
  • Develop an integrated visualization platform enabling management of energy transitions and scenario analysis.
  • Share good practices and guidelines from the 4 ULLs to facilitate replication across the EU.

Develop the Decision Support System (DSS) with mock-ups for design intervention at district level towards Climate Neutral PEDs.
Build a GIS-based web application aligned with end-user requirements for comparing renovation scenarios.
Support participation through Urban Living Labs for stakeholder involvement.
Contribute to CityGML standard development for digital city modeling.
Engage in creating integrated visualization platforms for district energy management.
Provide guidelines and best practices from project testbeds for wider EU adoption.
