W2W

A Wood-to-Wood Cascade Upcycling Valorisation Approach

Wood2Wood (W2W) is dedicated to creating a holistic framework for the multi-dimensional cascade valorisation of wood derived from construction and demolition (C&D) and furniture waste. The project promotes closed-loop systems where wood materials are continuously recycled and reused to reduce waste and foster more sustainable resource use.
The project revolves around four pillars: advanced separation and sorting technologies to efficiently recover wood materials; innovative upcycling processes and technologies to transform waste wood into high-value products; digital tools aimed at improving circular flows of secondary materials across value chains; and a supportive framework encompassing policy, market development, and skills enhancement to accelerate circular economy adoption.
Through demonstrations in three distinct use cases, W2W will validate sustainable value chains for secondary wood materials, paving the way for commercialization and widespread adoption of these innovative solutions by project completion.

The increasing demand for wood in energy production, construction materials, and chemicals is projected to surpass current supply by 2030, posing significant sustainability challenges. W2W addresses this issue by developing viable pathways to reduce demand for virgin wood, minimize waste sent to landfills and incineration, and facilitate the transition to a circular economy.

Key impacts include:

  • Establishing closed-loop wood material systems promoting continual reuse and recycling.
  • Reducing landfill and incineration waste through cascade valorisation of wood.
  • Enhancing market viability and sustainability of secondary wood materials.
  • Supporting environmental, economic, and social sustainability in the wood value chain.
  • Accelerating technological innovation in sorting, upcycling, and digital tracking of wood waste.
  • Enabling the creation of sustainable value chains validated in three diverse use cases.
